CHARITY AUCTION - 14 Crandon Street, Fremantle

On 29th August 2009 at 11am, Caporn Young Estate Agents will Auction the award winning heritage home at 14 Crandon Street, Fremantle, belonging to a very special lady, Jean Tonkinson.

In 2007, Jean was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer and given 18 months to live. Her much loved husband John, died of a rare form of abdominal cancer in 2000. Before John died, the Tonkinson’s decided that they would donate their entire estate to fund cancer research.

In April 2007 Jean approached St John of God Subiaco to help her establish a research foundation which was launched on February 18th 2009 as The Jean and John Tonkinson Research Foundation.

SJOGS Director of Medical Services and Chairman of the board of trustees of The Jean and John Tonkinson Research Foundation Dr Michael Levitt, believes that the Foundation can make a significant difference to the lives of people suffering from colorectal cancer.

“Across Australia, over 12,000 cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year, more than one third of whom ultimately succumb to their disease”, Dr Levitt said.

Jean has always had a love of medicine and derived great pleasure and professional satisfaction from her nursing career. John was a much loved and admired school teacher at Scotch College for nearly 30 years prior to his retirement and a great advocate of academic pursuit in general.

“The Foundation will combine John’s love of education and my love of medicine.” said Jean, a former Royal Perth Hospital nurse.

“I’ve had a marvellous life, so if I could imagine that in 10 years time, some young people who shared my own love of science and John’s love of education would benefit from the work of the Foundation, that would make me very happy.”

Dr Levitt said “The new Foundation has already attracted interest from some of Australia’s leading colorectal cancer researchers. The

Foundation can also serve as a reliable and effective medium for other people looking to donate to the highest quality medical research into this major health problem.”

In 2004, Jean, a long time Fremantle resident, and local heritage architect Gerard McCann won a heritage award following the remarkable restoration of her cottage in Crandon Street, opposite ‘the Green’.

The cottage is a unique piece of Fremantle’s history, encompassing character and charm as well as sympathetically installed modern day appliances. The ‘music room’ has acoustics second to none, the spacious wine cellar and attic loft ensure both intrigue and delight.

Caporn Young’s Master Auctioneer, Peter Clements from will be calling the Auction at 11am on Saturday, 29th August 2009.

Richard Young, Director of Caporn Young Estate Agents commented “We are proud to be assisting Jean with her wish. We will be donating every cent from our success fee for the sale of the property to the Jean and John Tonkinson Research Foundation. The response so far has been over whelming, our suppliers have been fantastic, jumping on board to donate their time and resources to maximise the amount raised for the Jean and John Tonkinson Research Foundation.”
